A Man Tried to Shoot a Puppy. The Puppy Shot Him Instead.

In Florida, a man pulled out a gun to put down seven puppies himself — reportedly because he couldn’t find anyone to take them. But while he had it raised, one of the puppies put a paw on the trigger and it went off.

The round hit the man, not a puppy. He was wounded, treated, and later charged with animal cruelty. All seven puppies were unharmed.

The US Constitution’s Second Amendment establishes the right to bear arms, and many states allow gun ownership and carry. Household ownership is high, and calls over accidental discharges and injuries aren’t rare. At the same time, animal cruelty is a crime across states, including under Florida law. The problem of unwanted dogs and cats runs deep, with shelters across the country chronically overcrowded.

From Jake

There are a lot of guns in America, so there are a lot of accidental-discharge calls. …But that’s not the part that matters here. Seven puppies, not one of them lost. From the hand of a man who pulled a gun because he couldn’t find anyone to take them, a puppy set its own paw down and stopped it. Florida’s shelters are all over capacity, and dogs like these have nowhere to go. All I really hope is that those seven found new homes.
