He Robbed the Same Dollar General Two Days in a Row, Blamed "Voices in His Head"

In November 2023, a man in Marion County, Florida, robbed the same Dollar General two days running. The first day, he took $327 from the register.

The next day, a clerk recognized him and tried to call police, so the man jumped him, grabbed the phone, wrestled him down, and took cash again. It was reportedly his third time hitting that store, counting one two years earlier. Deputies caught him about a quarter-mile away. His stated reason: voices in his head told him to do it.

Dollar General is a discount chain with roughly 20,000 stores across the US — often the “last store standing” in small rural towns big-box retailers have abandoned. Many locations run with a single clerk, and have been flagged as easy robbery targets. The “voices” the suspect described point to mental illness, and in the US, rural access to psychiatric care is thin, so cases like this often end in arrest rather than treatment.

From Jake

Dollar General is a lifeline for small-town America — the store that comes right after the gas station. Which is why the staff and the regulars all know each other, and he got recognized on day two. …But I don’t want to leave it as a punchline. Florida cut its psychiatric hospital beds sharply back in 1976, and the people with nowhere to go stayed on the streets. Someone who says voices told him to do it ends up at a pair of handcuffs instead of care. This is that kind of country too.
